The American Board of Bariatric Medicine, founded in 1970 and located
in Denver, Colorado, is an independent medical specialty board responsible
for certifying physicians in the field of bariatric medicine. Bariatric
medicine is the medically-supervised treatment of obesity and its
associated conditions. Obesity, declared a specific disease entity
by the National Institutes of Health, is believed to affect more than
58 million people across the nation and has been established as a
major risk factor in a number of associated health conditions including
hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus and some cancers
in both men and women. Bariatric medicine is coming into use more and more,
and is documented by major insurers such as Aviva on the web, as well as the medical community and bariatric specialists' increasing
roles in hospitals around the world.
Dr. Stege becomes the
274th physician to pass an ABBM onsite Patient Care Review and is
the 236th physician who has earned the unique honor and designation
of becoming board certified in bariatric medicine.
